Economic turmoil driven by inflation of 85% has plunged Turkey into one of its worst property crises. Skyrocketing prices have made finding affordable housing to rent or buy an uphill battle for many, especially for millions earning minimum wage who also struggle to cover food and energy costs. Increasing construction costs and inflation have pushed up housing prices globally. But Turkey’s property crisis has been exacerbated by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s unorthodox policy of lowering interest rates despite high inflation. That’s the opposite of traditional economic thinking. It’s pushed many to invest in property to preserve their savings against rising inflation. With housing in short supply, prices have soared. Foreign buyers also have inundated Turkey’s property market.
Ukrainian authorities report explosions in at least 3 cities, say Russia has launched «massive missile attack.»
With the war in Ukraine grinding through its 10th month, both sides are locked in a stalemated battle of attrition, which could set the stage for a new round of escalation. Many observers see the current deadlock as beneficial to Ukraine, allowing it to receive more state-of-the-art weapons from the West and prepare for new counteroffensives. In Russia, there is a growing sense of desperation among hard-liners about what they see as President Vladimir Putin’s hesitancy and lack of a clear strategy. Military analysts note the fighting is likely to intensify again as the soil freezes. Many point to Russian-occupied areas in the south as the most likely place for the next Ukrainian attack.
Drivers in the U.S., Europe and elsewhere are getting a break from the record-high pump prices that they endured over the summer. But that price tag is still difficult for many customers who have been struggling with relentless inflation and have been used to lower prices. And heading into the winter, a number of conditions are straining oil supply, which could end up pushing prices for oil and gasoline higher. Among them are restrictions on who can buy Russian oil and a price cap of $60 per barrel on Russia’s crude because of the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, drivers are wishing prices were lower but hoping the situation doesn’t get worse.

The police say they will strike «with an iron fist“ those who attack lives and property.  Truck drivers launched a strike last week to protest high fuel prices. The strike and protests have spread to several cities across Jordan. The kingdom is a close Western ally and has long been seen as an island of stability in a turbulent region.

A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Biden administration from ending a Trump-era policy requiring asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico for hearings in U.S. immigration court. The judge in Texas on Thursday stayed the termination until legal challenges by Texas and Missouri are settled but didn’t order the policy reinstated and the impact on the program wasn’t immediately clear. Under President Donald Trump, about 70,000 asylum-seekers were forced to wait in Mexico for U.S. hearings under the policy introduced in January 2019, which President Joe Biden suspended on his first day in office. The same judge ordered it reinstated last year but the U.S. Supreme Court overturned that ruling and sent the policy back for reconsideration.

Government officials say a bomb has exploded on a highway in Turkey as a van carrying police officers drove past, injuring nine of its passengers. The interior minister said two people were detained in connection with the attack, which occurred Friday in the city of Diyarbakir in southeast Turkey. The bomb was placed inside a parked vehicle near a market selling livestock. Eight police officers and a civilian were taken to hospitals as a precaution but were not in serious condition. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Kurdish militants have been behind similar attacks in the region in the past. Islamic and leftist extremists have also carried out bombings in the country.
