New Horizons Symphony (NHS) of Las Cruces will perform a «Sister Cities Concert» with approximately 35 members of the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Torreón (OSIJUT), a youth orchestra from Torreon, Mexico.
The concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at Atkinson Recital Hall in the New Mexico State University Music Building, 1075 N. Horseshoe on the NMSU campus. There is no charge to attend.
NHS conductor Jorge Martinez-Rios was born in Torreón and “is very excited about this musical and cultural exchange between Las Cruces and his hometown of Torreón,” NHS said. “He has worked closely with Ethan Eager, conductor of the Torreon orchestra, to plan the program and the logistics involved in bringing the students to the U.S.”
The Las Cruces Sister Cities Foundation is providing meals to the Torreón group during their three-day visit. The visiting students are players of wind, brass, string and percussion instruments.
The concert will be a mix of American and Mexican music, including Sinatra songs sung by El Pasoan Joshua Lucero, 16. About 100 musicians will be performing. The program will include “Rhapsody in Blue,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “My Way,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “Cool” from “West Side Story,” “Sobre las Olas,” “El Cumbanchero,” “Son de la Negra” and “Huapango.”
OSIJUT was founded in 2010 by the Institute of Art and Education, a branch of the Torreón city government, to give young people in the area the opportunity to further develop their musical talents, strengthen their sense of community and offer members and the public access to quality music. OSIJUT has performed throughout Mexico. It includes more than 80 young musicians.
NHS is a nonprofit orchestra providing musical opportunities for adults. It performs three concerts a year and rehearses Thursday evenings in the NMSU Band Room.
