NEW YORK (AP) — A report by environmental group Oceana has found that plastic waste from Amazon packages went up by 18% last year, but Amazon says it has reduced its use of single-use plastic across its network.
According to the Oceana’s estimates, released Thursday, Amazon’s plastic waste jumped from 599 million pounds in 2020 to 709 million pounds last year — an amount that can circle the planet more than 800 times in the form of air pillows, the group said.

Germany opened its first state-chartered liquefied natural gas vessel as Europe’s largest economy races to replace Russian gas amid an energy crunch and freezing temperatures.
Quarterback Davius Richard ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns, including a 1-yard scoring plunge in overtime, and North Carolina Central beat Jackson State 41-34 in the Celebration Bowl. It spoiled the Tigers’ bid for an undefeated season under outgoing coach Deion Sanders. The Eagles’ defense made a goal-line stand on Jackson State’s first overtime possession to preserve the win. Shedeur Sanders’ 19-yard touchdown pass to Travis Hunter as time expired in regulation set up Alejandro Mata’s tying extra point to send the game to overtime. Deion Sanders will take over the program at Colorado next season.
Greece’s coast guard reports that an infant has arrived dead to an island on a boat carrying 34 other migrants. It says in a Saturday statement that a patrol vessel found the boat early Friday on a rocky shore near the town of Plomari. An ambulance arrived on the scene soon after, but a doctor merely confirmed the child’s death. Authorities are investigating, and an autopsy is pending. The statement from the coast guard did not say where the migrants were from. Plomari is on the island of Lesbos, close to the Turkish coast.

The shooting near a courtroom at the St. Mary Parish courthouse in Franklin led to a lockdown. No one else was injured. Troopers say findings will be turned over to the district attorney for review once the investigation is complete.
Morocco’s fans in the Arab world are taking the North African team’s 2-1 loss to Croatia in the World Cup third-place playoff philosophically. The team had already made history, becoming the first Arab and first African team to reach the semifinals in the international soccer tournament. Its loss to France on Wednesday dashed fans’ hopes that Morocco would become an underdog champion, but many had hoped that it would at least take third place in facing off against Croatia. In the Moroccan capital, national team’s fans are disappointed in Saturday’s outcome, but point with pride to the team’s historic performance. One fan in Rabat says: “They remain champions in our eyes.»
Libyan officials say a powerful militia was involved in the clandestine detention and questioning of a suspect in the 1988 downing of a New York-bound PanAm flight over Lockerbie, Scotland. The alleged bombmaker involved in the attack, Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi, was eventually extradited to the United States earlier this month, under orders from one of two rival governments running Libya. Some have questioned the legality of the extradition because of the involvement of a militia and apparent lack of formal procedures. The White House and the U.S. Justice Department decline to comment. U.S. officials have said privately that they believe this played out as a by-the-book extradition.

Legislators say the 1,000-student institution in Birmingham may close within months without the money. The college says the request is part of a plan to solidify finance «for the long term.” Birmingham-Southern wants the state to give the college $12.5 million in federal COVID-19 relief money and $17.5 million in state education funding. The Methodist-affiliated college is also seeking $5 million from the city of Birmingham and $2.5 million from Jefferson County.
Hockey Canada’s provincial and territorial members has elected a new board of directors at the national sport organization’s annual winter meeting. Hugh L. Fraser, a retired judge with nearly three decades experience at the Ontario court of justice, is the new chair of the board. Former women’s national team captain Cassie Campbell-Pascall is set to fill one of the other nine seats. Hockey Canada’s previous board stepped down in October amid blistering criticism related to the scandal-plagued federation’s handling of sexual assault allegations and hushed payouts to victims.
