A men’s World Cup super-G slated for Friday in Val Gardena has been canceled due to a mixture of fog, rain and warm temperatures. The start of the race was initially postponed while workers cleared 8 inches (20 centimeters) of overnight snowfall off the Saslong course. But then the race was called off when the fog moved in. It wasn’t immediately clear if the race will be made up later this season at another resort. Vincent Kriechmayr won a shortened downhill on the Saslong on Thursday in a race that had been postponed from Beaver Creek, Colorado. The regularly scheduled downhill on the Saslong is set for Saturday.
US safety regulators are investigating reports that autonomous robotaxis run by General Motors’ Cruise LLC can stop too quickly or unexpectedly come to a halt, potentially stranding passengers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it opened the probe after getting three reports of Cruise autonomous vehicles braking so hard that they were rear-ended by other vehicles. At the time, robotaxis were staffed by human safety drivers. The agency also says it has multiple reports of Cruise robotaxis without human safety drivers becoming immobilized in San Francisco traffic, possibly stranding passengers and blocking lanes. It has no reports of injuries in the crashes.
Morocco has been rewarded by FIFA with hosting rights for the next Club World Cup in February. European champion Real Madrid, South American champion Flamengo and Seattle Sounders from the United States will play in the seven-team tournament. The decision by FIFA’s ruling council follows Morocco’s inspiring run to the World Cup semifinals in Qatar. FIFA also commits to launching a 32-team version of the Club World Cup in 2025.
Before she became one of the biggest-selling female solo artists of the 20th century, Dionne Warwick was a teenaged piano major who earned tuition money as a background singer on records by The Drifters, Dinah Washington, Brook Benton, Solomon Burke and other vocal greats.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband will visit a new 988 call center that’s part of the recently launched national hotline intended to help anyone experiencing a mental health emergency. Second gentleman Douglas Emhoff has spoken out on mental health and normalizing talk of emotions for men. Emhoff will meet with crisis counselors and call center operators on Friday and receive a tour of the Maryland center. Emhoff’s visit comes as the entertainment industry reels from the suicide this week of Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the longtime and beloved dancing DJ on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
Micah Parsons took a lot of heat this week for expressing an opinion many people share. The Dallas Cowboys’ star linebacker said the Philadelphia Eagles are 12-1 more because of the overall talent on the team than Jalen Hurts. The Eagles’ third-year quarterback is a frontrunner for NFL Most Valuable Player entering Week 15. Speaking on Von Miller’s podcast, Parsons pointed out the Eagles have an excellent defense and superb players on offense around Hurts. He’s not wrong. The conversation between Parsons and Miller about Hurts and other MVP candidates is a similar debate voters are having.
FIFA expects to earn $11 billion through 2026 with a 48-team men’s World Cup in North America set to deliver a huge rise in revenue. The four-year budget was presented to the ruling FIFA Council. It foresees almost 50% increase in income mainly tied to broadcasting and sponsor deals for the men’s World Cup. FIFA typically makes conservative budget estimates and ends up overshooting targets. The $7.5 billion revenue announced in Qatar last month for the 2019-22 commercial cycle was $1 billion more than the forecast.
It was a bittersweet day for the Italian ski team when Elena Curtoni and Sofia Goggia finished 1-2 in a World Cup downhill held in difficult conditions but Goggia came away with an injured left hand. Goggia hit her hand on the third gate of the Corviglia course and said she feared it was broken. Goggia immediately took her glove off in the finish area and quickly had her hand wrapped up. The Italian team said Goggia had a bruised hand and was heading to a local hospital for a full evaluation.
Greece’s governing center-right New Democracy party has suspended one of its European Parliament members from the party, pending the outcome of an investigation by European authorities into the payment of an assistant. New Democracy said in an announcement Friday that the suspension was ordered by party leader and prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. It said that while the suspension is in place, Maria Spyraki will not be a parliamentary candidate for the party in the next general elections, which are to be held in the first half of next year. In a statement to Greek media, Spyraki welcomed the lifting of her immunity, and stressed the case was unrelated to a corruption scandal currently roiling the European Parliament.
Civil rights advocates have filed a lawsuit against the New Mexico Corrections Department seeking to ensure access for prison inmates to medication that reduces opioid withdrawal symptoms or cravings. The lawsuit was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court by the ACLU and Disability Rights New Mexico on behalf of a 28-year-old woman who lost access to anti-withdrawal medication while incarcerated. The lawsuit contends that denying inmates access to anti-craving and withdrawal mediation constitutes cruel and unusual punishment and violates the Americans with Disabilities Act. Corrections Department officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
The U.S. Department of Commerce is adding 36 Chinese companies to an export controls blacklist, citing concerns over national security. The addition of the companies to the “entity list» means that export licenses will likely be denied for any U.S. company trying to do business with them. It signals a hardening of U.S. efforts to prevent China, especially its military, from acquiring advanced technologies such as leading edge computer chips and hypersonic weapons. That comes as the Biden administration is moving to beef up American manufacturing capabilities for semiconductors and other advanced technologies. The list of changes to the entity list was in the Federal Register, scheduled for publication Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron is about to jet off to Qatar for the second time in a week, despite broad concerns about the emirate’s human rights and environmental record. Why? Because France is in the World Cup final, and Macron really is a big soccer fan — and a prominent advocate of the longstanding partnership between the two countries. A video broadcast after France’s victory over Morocco in the semifinal showed an enthusiastic Macron mingling with French players in the dressing room on Wednesday evening at the Doha stadium. The World Cup in Qatar has sparked multiple controversies — from the living conditions of migrant workers to the place of LGBTQ people, as well as women and minorities.
Starbucks workers around the U.S. are planning a three-day strike starting Friday. The walkouts are part of their effort to unionize the coffee chain’s stores. Starbucks Workers United says more than 1,000 baristas at 100 stores are planning to walk out. The strike will be the longest in the year-old unionization campaign. More than 264 of Starbucks’ 9,000 company-run U.S. stores have voted to unionize since late last year. Bargaining has begun but Starbucks hasn’t reached a contract agreement with the union at any store. Starbucks opposes the unionization effort.

A former commander in the Kosovo Liberation Army has been found guilty of arbitrarily detaining and torturing prisoners perceived as supporters of Serbia during the country’s 1999 war of independence, and murdering one of them. The presiding judge called Friday’s conviction a “milestone” for a special court based in the Netherlands. The commander, Salih Mustafa, was sentenced to 26 years’ imprisonment for the crimes committed at a KLA compound in Zllash, Kosovo, in April 1999. He was acquitted of one charge of mistreating detainees. He had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Throughout the history of public health in the United States, there have been a handful of moments where a broad cross-section of scientists and other leaders spotted something happening and thought “This is new. This is bad. This could change everything.”

Elections, coups, disease outbreaks and extreme weather are some of the main events that occurred across Africa in 2022. Problems brewed thousands of miles away — climate change and the war in Ukraine — have been devastating to the continent, say experts. Experts say the climate crisis is hitting Africa “first and hardest.” Kevin Mugenya, a senior food security advisor for Mercy Corps said the continent of 54 countries and 1.3 billion people is facing “a catastrophic global food crisis” that “will worsen if actors do not act quickly.” On the political front, peaceful elections in Angola, Kenya, Lesotho and Senegal, were bright spots for Africa. But armed conflict, including jihadi insurgencies, loomed large across the continent.
In at least five African countries, gamblers and experts said that many see the growing sports betting industry as a source of regular income, and a hope out of leaving poverty. Critics warn that sports betting in Africa is underpinned by widespread poverty, unemployment and poor or non-existent regulation. In Uganda, an East African country where annual income per capita was $840 in 2020, many see sports betting as a path to survival and perhaps even prosperity. They range from students to politicians, night watchmen to civil servants like a hapless health official who now is being asked to refund money he doesn’t have after losing money for immunization allowances on a World Cup game.
Four people have been hospitalized in critical condition after a suspected crush at a London concert venue. Police say eight people were taken to hospitals after being caught in a crush of people trying to get into the O2 Brixton Academy, where Nigerian singer Asake was performing. Two other injured people were treated at the scene. Police say emergency services were called Thursday night after “a large crowd attempted to gain entry without tickets.” Video from outside the venue shows scores of people pushing to get in. The force said it would hold a thorough investigation into what happened and how officers treated the crowd.
