Randy Gregory’s knee is healthy and he’s eager to return after missing more than two months. The Denver Broncos pass rusher returns to a defense that’s one of the tops in the league, but to a team eliminated from playoff contention. Gregory was asked why he doesn’t just shut it down for the season and prepare for next season. He said he’s shut it down enough already. Gregory is hoping to be activated off injured reserve and play Sunday against Arizona. He has two sacks and seven quarterback hits this season after signing a five-year, $70 million deal with the Broncos.
The NCAA isn’t backing away from enforcing rules and imposing penalties for rules violations amid a host of changes to college sports’ governing body. But it is hoping that changes to the enforcement process lead to cases being handled more efficiently. The NCAA announced an agreement with Memphis to resolve recruiting violations within the Tigers’ men’s basketball program. That allowed Memphis to begin serving penalties even while one individual in the case contests allegations. It marks the second time the NCAA has allowed a split case. The other came in September tied to football recruiting violations at Air Force.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired infielder Yonny Hernández from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash. The 24-year-old switch-hitter played in 12 games for Arizona last season after being traded by Texas in April. Hernández was claimed by Oakland last month and was designated for assignment this week. He played 10 games at third base and two games at second base for the D-backs. He spent seven seasons in the minors, mostly with the Rangers organization. The Dodgers’ 40-man roster now stands at 39.
California will stop making companies pay employees who can’t work because they caught the coronavirus while on the job. The California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board voted to end the rule on Thursday. They did it in part because the rule has become harder to enforce. Only people who caught the virus on the job are eligible to keep getting paid. The virus is so widespread that it’s hard to tell where someone got sick. Workers who get sick can take sick leave or file for workers’ compensation benefits. Several board members said they want to bring the rule back in the future.
United Airlines is eyeing the hiring of 15,000 workers nationwide after the air carrier decided to buy scores and possibly hundreds of Boeing jetliners.
The warm-weather Miami Dolphins are bracing for wintry conditions in an AFC East showdown at the Buffalo Bills on Saturday night. Dolphins receiver Jaylen Waddle is focused more on the task at hand rather than the prospect of playing in his first snow game. Waddle says he’s packing “competitive spirit» rather than extra clothes with temperatures projected to be in the 20s. The Dolphins have lost two straight and fallen to sixth in the AFC playoff race with an 8-5 record. The Bills are 10-3 and one win from clinching their fourth straight playoff berth.
All signs point to Tyler Huntley being Baltimore’s starting quarterback for a second game in a row. The Ravens have ruled Lamar Jackson out for Saturday’s game at Cleveland. He’s recovering from a knee injury. Huntley left last weekend’s victory at Pittsburgh in the third quarter, but he’s been able to practice this week. Coach John Harbaugh says he’s cleared concussion protocol. Huntley says he doesn’t think he actually had a concussion. The Ravens have confidence in Huntley — and they were able to win last weekend even when rookie Anthony Brown had to finish the game.

An Oregon judge has handed guns rights advocates a victory and placed a new, voter-approved ban on high-capacity magazines on hold until questions about its constitutionality can be decided. Harney County Judge Robert Raschio released the written ruling Thursday after a lengthy court hearing earlier this week in which attorneys for gun rights groups sought a preliminary injunction to stop the narrowly passed ban on magazines of more than 10 rounds. The ruling followed ones Raschio made Tuesday that temporarily blocked a permit-to-purchase provision of Measure 114 and another part of the law that would prevent the sale of a gun until the results of a background check come back.
The National Labor Relations Board will investigate an unfair labor practice complaint involving the rights of University of Southern California football and basketball players. In February, the National College Players Association filed an unfair labor practice charge against USC, the Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA alleging misclassification of college players as “student-athletes” and other violations. The NLRB’s Region 21 in Los Angeles will look into the complaint that covers football and men’s and women’s basketball players at the private school.

LOS ANGELES — Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has asked the state’s inspector general to investigate the Virginia State Police’s hiring of Austin Lee Edwards, the now-deceased cop who killed three family members of a 15-year-old Riverside girl he “catfished” online.
New York City’s ban on the sale of foie gras had already been delayed by a court challenge. Now it has been found in violation of state agricultural law. The state Department of Agriculture and Markets informed city officials Wednesday that the ban “unreasonably restricts” the business of two upstate foie gras farms that have sued over the law. The ban was scheduled to take effect Nov. 25, but that was put on hold this fall by a state judge while the lawsuit proceeds. It is not immediately clear if the city will challenge the state’s order.

If the New England Patriots make the playoffs, their weeklong stay out West likely will be a major reason. The Patriots remained in Arizona this past week after beating the Cardinals 27-13 on Monday night. They trained in Tucson ahead of Sunday’s game with the Las Vegas Raiders. New England is 7-6 and in position for the seventh and final AFC playoff spot. Two other teams just outside the playoff race have the same record as New England. Sunday’s game against the Raiders is critical, in part because the Patriots will follow that with three games against teams that as of now would be in the playoffs.
Nets star Ben Simmons said he feels “great” after injury bouts with both his lower back and his left knee/calf, but head coach Jacque Vaughn said the team will continue to be cautious — within reason — with Simmons’ workload.
Federal officials on Thursday granted Spire Inc. a permanent certificate to operate a natural gas pipeline in Missouri and Illinois, angering the environmental group that had sued over the project. The pipeline carries natural gas to the St. Louis region, where Spire serves around 650,000 customers. But the Environmental Defense Fund sued in 2020, raising concerns that the pipeline was approved without adequate review. For the past year, the pipeline had been operating under a temporary certificate while FERC conducted a court-ordered review. The Environmental Defense Fund said that some landowners, ratepayers and stakeholders were shut out of the review. Spire called the process “thorough.»
Federal regulators have ordered a review of security standards at the nation’s far-flung electricity transmission network. The review follows shootings at two electric substations in North Carolina that damaged equipment and caused more than 45,000 customers to lose power. The order by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission directs officials to study the effectiveness of existing reliability standards for the physical security of the nation’s power grid and determine whether they need to be improved. FERC Chairman Richard Glick said Thursday that security and reliability of the nation’s electric grid is one of the agency’s top priorities.

Residents of The Dalles, Oregon, will soon know how much water Google’s data centers there have been using to cool the computers. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports Thursday that a lawsuit seeking to keep the information confidential has been dropped. Data centers around the world help people stream movies, store trillions of photos and conduct daily business online, but a single facility can churn through millions of gallons of water per day. The issue is a sensitive one in The Dalles, which is in drought and where some residents have seen water levels in their wells drop.
PHILADELPHIA — Coach Doc Rivers said Thursday that 76ers shooting guard Tyrese Maxey will miss at least a couple more weeks with a fractured left foot.
Prosecutors allege that the leader of a small polygamous group on the Arizona-Utah border helped orchestrate the escape of eight girls he considered his wives from a group home where they were placed after authorities learned of what was happening. U.S. attorneys in Arizona allege in a superseding indictment filed this week that Sam Bateman, a self-declared prophet who is behind bars while he awaits trial, worked with three adult women he also claims to be his wives to help the girls escape foster care. The document is the latest development in a federal case that has roiled Bateman’s small community on the Utah-Arizona border.
A coalition made up of legal advocates and a law firm is suing Dallas over a new rule that subjects people to fines of up to $500 for standing on road medians, arguing it is unconstitutional and will disproportionately impact homeless residents.
Gov. Andy Beshear says Kentucky soon will operate three high-security juvenile detention centers. He said Thursday that the centers will house teenage male offenders charged with serious crimes. It’s the next step in the governor’s efforts to bring security problems under control in the state’s juvenile detention system. The Democratic governor last week announced plans to revamp the troubled system by assigning male teens to facilities based on the severity of their offenses. It comes as the state-operated system struggles to quell violent outbursts by some juveniles. A riot broke out last month at one detention center.
A judge in Indiana has ruled that a Purdue University student charged with murder in the stabbing death of his dormitory roommate is incompetent to stand trial. Tippecanoe Circuit Judge Sean Persin appointed two doctors Thursday to treat Ji Min Sha until he is found competent to understand the charges against him and assist in his defense. Sha, a 22-year-old cybersecurity major from Seoul, South Korea, faces one count of murder in the Oct. 5 slaying of 20-year-old Varun Manish Chheda of Indianapolis. Prosecutors allege Sha stabbed Chheda several times in the head and neck with a folding knife.
The Green Bay Packers host the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night in a matchup featuring two of the NFL’s most disappointing teams. The Rams won the Super Bowl and the Packers had the NFC’s top playoff seed last season. Both are below .500 this season. Los Angeles QB Baker Mayfield will get a chance to continue rejuvenating his career after leading a comeback victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in his Rams debut. The Packers are back from their bye week after keeping their faint playoff hopes alive with a come-from-behind victory at Chicago.
Stephen Curry’s heroics have saved the Warriors numerous times during a tough start to their title defense this season. But the reigning champs will reportedly need to do without their superstar guard for the foreseeable future.
