BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Dec 15, 2022–
Astria Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:ATXS), a biopharmaceutical company developing STAR-0215 for the treatment of hereditary angioedema (HAE), today announced positive preliminary results from the Phase 1a clinical trial of STAR-0215 in healthy subjects establishing early proof of concept of STAR-0215 as a potential long-acting preventative treatment for HAE. STAR-0215 was well-tolerated at all doses studied. The results showed rapid and sustained drug levels consistent with clinical benefit and sustained target engagement with plasma kallikrein inhibition for at least three months, supporting the potential for STAR-0215 to be dosed once every three months or less frequently. Astria plans to initiate the ALPHA-STAR Phase 1b/2 trial in HAE patients in Q1 2023.

Documents released in the 2021 dropped prosecution of the Colorado gay nightclub shooter paint a picture of potential missteps by prosecutors. Court transcripts reveal prosecutors were unable to successfully serve witnesses in a 2021 kidnapping case against Anderson Aldrich and did not argue to keep the case alive when the judge moved this July to dismiss it. That raises more questions about whether enough was done to stop the recent mass shooting. Police say Aldrich attacked patrons at Club Q in Colorado Springs on Nov. 19 killing five people and wounding 17 with an AR-15-style rifle.
The New York Yankees have added Carlos Rodón to their rotation, agreeing to a $162 million, six-year contract with the left-hander. A person familiar with the negotiations confirmed the contract to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because it was pending a physical. New York took care of its most pressing question when it convinced AL MVP Aaron Judge to stay in the Bronx with a $360 million, nine-year contract — baseball’s biggest free agent deal ever. But the contract for Rodón is an addition for the reigning AL East champions. Rodón went 14-8 this year with a 2.88 ERA in his lone season with the San Francisco Giants,

Tom Brady likes what he’s seen of Joe Burrow. Brady says Burrow is a great young player who’s living up to high expectations for him with the Cincinnati Bengals. The seven-time Super Bowl champion and the top pick in the 2020 draft meet for the first time when Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Bengals. Cincinnati has won five straight games and seven of eight overall to rebound from a slow start. The Bengals appear capable of making another deep playoff run. At 6-7, the sputtering Bucs are in first place in the NFC South despite having a losing record.
Louisiana law enforcement officers have been charged with state crimes for their roles in the deadly 2019 arrest of Ronald Greene. The charges range from negligent homicide to malfeasance. They were handed down by a grand jury on Thursday. Police had initially blamed the Black motorist’s death on a car crash at the end of a high-speed chase in rural northeast Louisiana. But then The Associated Press obtained and published long-suppressed body-camera video that showed white officers beating, stunning and dragging Greene as he pleaded for mercy and wailed, “I’m scared!” These are the first charges to emerge from Greene’s death. They follow yearslong investigations that have expanded to examine whether police brass concealed evidence of troopers beating other Black motorists.
More questions than answers are surfacing at a conference in Las Vegas about what to do about projected shortages of Colorado River water relied upon by seven U.S. states, Native American tribes and Mexico. Some include: Who will bear the brunt of more water supply cuts, and how quickly? What target goals need to be met for voluntary cutbacks before the federal government steps in? What about controlling water evaporation from reservoirs and canals? Officials said Thursday during the Colorado River Water Users Association conference they don’t have answers yet. But they agree the key question is how to live with less. Federal water managers at the Bureau of Reclamation have set a Tuesday deadline for public comments about possible actions.

Panama’s government has ordered the local subsidiary of a Canadian mining company to cease operations at its huge open pit copper mine after it failed to sign a new contract outlining substantially higher payments to the government. Minera Panama is a subsidiary of Canada’s First Quantum Minerals Ltd. It is the largest private investment in the history of Panama, employs thousands and accounts directly and indirectly for some 3% of Panama’s gross domestic product. A government statement says President Laurentino Cortizo’s Cabinet voted Thursday to order the mine to stop operations. Alaska state Rep. David Eastman has testified that anyone who broke the law during the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, should be prosecuted. However, he stopped short of calling out the far-right group Oath Keepers by name. Eastman is accused of violating the Alaska state Constitution’s disloyalty clause over his lifetime membership in the Oath Keepers. The constitution states anyone who is a member of a group that advocates the overthrow of the U.S. government should be disqualified from holding office. The presiding judge in the case declined to dismiss the case against Eastman after the plaintiff’s attorney rested his case.

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields grew up as a fan of Michael Vick. He’s closing in on a feat accomplished only by Vick and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson. Fields needs 95 yards rushing to become the third NFL quarterback to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. The Bears face the Philadelphia Eagles and their intimidating pass rush on Sunday. The Bears have talked about cutting back on planned running plays by Fields. But he’s always a threat to scramble under pressure. His off-script runs have helped the Bears rank sixth in the NFL in third-down conversion rate.

A bill to rescind the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for members of the U.S. military and provide nearly $858 billion for national defense has passed the Senate and now goes to President Joe Biden to be signed into law. The bill approved Thursday night authorizes about $45 billion more for defense programs than Biden requested and roughly 10% more than last year’s bill. Lawmakers are trying to account for inflation and boost the nation’s military competitiveness with China and Russia. It includes a 4.6% pay raise for servicemembers and the Defense Department’s civilian workforce.
